Emmaus Bradford is a homelessness charity that is currently seeking to raise £150,000 towards the refurbishment of a property in Undercliffe and provide long-term accommodation for 25 homeless people from the district.
We raise funds through our two shops which are located on Bank Street in Bradford City Centre, and on Cross Lane. Both shops sell quality secondhand furniture, homewares, clothing, toys, books, vinyl records and interesting bric-a-brac. We can collect donations free of charge and welcome drop offs at our stores, during opening hours.
Emmaus Bradford is run by a team of dedicated staff, volunteers and trustees who come from a variety of different sectors and backgrounds. What unites them all is a passion to fight against homelessness and social exclusion in Bradford.

Working towards our goal
Our goal is to provide a long-term home for people who have experienced homelessness, alongside support, training and meaningful work. We have acquired a property in Undercliffe for this purpose and are currently renovating it. We welcomed the first residents in April 2022 and want to welcome more as rooms become ready. We are working to raise £150,000 to fully refurbish the property with the ultimate goal of providing 25 rooms.
Homelessness in Bradford
Bradford has a significant number of homeless people which has been further increased due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the rising cost of living, and the end of financial assistance schemes such as furlough and increase in basic living allowance. Pressure on people’s finances, and on family and personal relationships, are putting people at high risk of homelessness and increasing the number of people sofa surfing and sleeping rough in this district. Whilst there is some help for homeless people in the area, the Emmaus model goes further in the provision of a long-term stable home, ongoing support and training, and a community of peers – all of which helps people move on with dignity from their current circumstances. Emmaus offers a ‘hand up’ rather than a ‘hand out’. It also fits well with our local authority’s approach to tackling the wider causes of homelessness.
