Emmaus Bradford is committed to working towards uplifting the lives of people who have experienced homelessness and fostering a sense of solidarity within the community. Emmaus founder, Abbé Pierre, encouraged people to ‘serve first those most in need’ and it’s something we live by here at Emmaus Bradford.
Solidarity is key to the Emmaus ethos and means helping those less fortunate than yourself. Everyone at Emmaus, companions, staff, trustees and volunteers, are encouraged to carry out acts of solidarity.
For companions in particular, this has a huge impact on their self-esteem, showing them the impact they as an individual can have on the lives of others and the value they can offer.
In this blog, we’re looking back over the last 12 months at some of our acts of solidarity.
Clothing voucher scheme for people experiencing homelessness
In 2022 we launched our clothing voucher scheme for people experiencing homelessness. Clothing can be redeemed from our Bank Street charity shop where individuals can choose clothing and shoes. The scheme saw Emmaus Bradford work in partnership with other local charities and agencies who work with people who are currently homeless.
Christmas Fayre
In December 2022 we held our annual Christmas Fayre where children could see Santa for free whilst enjoying juice and biscuits and receive a selection box.
We believe that hosting low-cost or free events like this brings immense joy and happiness to families in our community who may be facing financial challenges. It’s essential to ensure that everyone, regardless of their income, can experience the magic of the holiday season.
We’re proud to create an environment where families can come together, have a blast, and make unforgettable memories.
Easter Egg Hunt
Similar to our Christmas Fayre, we had another fantastic event that was absolutely free! It was a thrilling experience where lucky children were randomly chosen to win scrumptious chocolate goodies.
Coronation BBQ
To celebrate King Charles III coronation we invited some of our neighbours to our community building, Pollard House for a delicious BBQ. It was a smashing day and our companions really enjoyed getting to know their neighbours and building up community spirit!
Solidarity sale 2023
On Saturday 17 June, Emmaus Bradford will donate 100% of takings from our shops to Emmaus International. This annual sale, held by all Emmaus groups, is our movement’s main source of income to carry out solidarity programmes and campaigns across the world!
Over the next 12 months we will be looking at more ways in which we can give back to the wider community. If you’d like to help us in any way please contact Darrell, our Chief Executive Officer here.
