Becca’s role really is about people, plants and the planet, as her day to day duties include overseeing the nursery site and coordinating the activities of our volunteer workforce.
Our Community Tree Nursery at Trewoon has three main aims; to meet the need for locally grown trees and plants in Cornwall, to provide volunteering opportunities for people in the local community, and to generate income to help us open a residential community which will provide accommodation, support and work experience to formerly homeless people.
To get to know Becca, we asked her a few questions…
I’ve had the privilege of shaping young minds while fostering a deep-seated passion for wildlife and the environment in my previous career as a primary school teacher. Recently, having embarked on a new academic journey, culminating in the completion of my MSc in Land & Ecological Restoration, which consequently has led to my new role with Emmaus Cornwall as their Tree Nursery Lead, based near St Austell.
Throughout my career and studies, I’ve embraced a holistic approach to life, recognising the interconnectedness between people and our planet. I firmly believe in the importance of nurturing both people and the environment in every way possible. This role with Emmaus Cornwall will allow me to continue nurturing and supporting both the planet and people.
With a blend of education, passion, and hands-on experience, I’m committed to making a meaningful impact to conservation, community efforts and fostering a harmonious relationship between humanity and the natural world while helping people to reap the benefits that working outdoors can bring.
I’m excited to work with Emmaus Cornwall in supporting our local community and provide Cornwall with many trees in a bid to mitigate climate change, build strong relations with our local community’s and support those that need it. I hope to create a calming and nurturing safe space where everyone will be welcome to come and work with our trees, have space to be quiet, take in the view and enjoy a social cuppa and some cake.
Transforming my passions into a fulfilling profession has been a journey of doing what I love while empowering people to feel connected. My artistic flair brings creativity to my work, while my practical mindset ensures tangible results. In my spare time, I indulge my enthusiasm for birds—I’m a dedicated bird nerd. I also enjoy spending time with my family, gardening extensively, crocheting, and walking my two mischievous terriers.
