A Mirfield man is going alcohol free throughout January to improve his health and raise funds for Emmaus Leeds.

Up until the start of January, Andy Lewis, aged 27, regularly enjoyed a drink down at his local pub, The Railway in Mirfield. Andy wanted to prove to himself that he could manage a dry month and raise money for a charity that supports people affected by homelessness.

Andy said: “I haven’t not had a drink for a month since I was about 18. Alcohol was beginning to affect my work and my relationships, so I am doing this challenge for my long-term health.

“I want to prove to myself that I can live without booze for a month and hopefully more, as it was becoming far too much of my life. No one believes I can actually do this, but I would like to prove them wrong! I want all of the money raised to go straight to Emmaus Leeds as the charity is a vital support system for disadvantaged people.”

Emmaus Leeds supports 26 formerly homeless people by providing them with a stable home and work in its social enterprise. The charity has its main community building and social enterprise on St Mary’s Street and a stall at Kirkgate Market.

Donald Forrester, Chief Executive of Emmaus Leeds, said: “I congratulate Andy for taking on this challenge and for his kind support of Emmaus Leeds. We never cease to be amazed at the variety of ways in which people get involved and give their support to our charity. Hopefully this fundraising challenge will benefit Andy in the long run and help to inspire others too.”
