Members of Leeds Junior Lawyers Division (JLD) have completed a year of fundraising activity for Emmaus Leeds, raising more than £1,700.
During the past 12 months, members of Leeds JLD held a Great Gatsby themed charity dinner dance at Oulton Hall, hosted quizzes and BBQ’s, completed charity cycle rides, ran the Edinburgh Half Marathon and Leeds 10k, and even joined a fundraising walk to the top of Ben Nevis.
Emmaus Leeds supports 26 formerly homeless people by providing them with a stable home and meaningful work for as long as they need it. The charity has its main community building and social enterprise on St Mary’s Street, and also runs a stall at Kirkgate Market.
Rachael Jackson, Charity Officer for Leeds JLD, said: “Leeds JLD are proud of the partnership we have built over the past year with Emmaus Leeds. Their commitment, and the support they provide to each other and the wider community, is inspiring. Hopefully the funds we have raised will help make a difference to them and the amazing work they do.”
Hayley Marsden, Leeds JLD member, said: “Despite not being able to see anything of the view from the top of Ben Nevis through the rain, we really enjoyed meeting some of the companions and staff from Emmaus and hearing their stories. It was great to be able to support them in their fundraising challenge.”
Leeds Junior Lawyers Division are a non-profit organisation who represent over 300 members across the legal community in Leeds and West Yorkshire, from law students right up to 5 years PQE, through various social, educational and networking events.
Donald Forrester, Chief Executive of Emmaus Leeds, said: “We are over the moon with the support received from Leeds Junior Lawyers Division as their nominated charity of the year. The amount raised by the Leeds JLD members has far exceeded our expectations and we will use the money to directly support people off the streets and into long-term, stable accommodation. Thank you to all Leeds JLD members and everyone who has supported their fundraising initiatives over the past 12 months.”
