What is Lucie’s Laundry?
In February 2023, Emmaus North East proudly opened the doors to Lucie’s Laundry, our free community launderette. Named in honor of Lucie Coutaz, this initiative was born out of a pressing need within our local community.
With feedback from community members and local schools it became evident that beyond food scarcity, the inability to wash and dry clothes posed a significant challenge for families. The harsh realities of the cost of living crisis and fuel poverty were starkly apparent, as children were often seen attending school in unclean uniforms.
Thanks to the generous support of Procter & Gamble, who donated the necessary machinery, and the collaboration of South Tyneside Pledge Members, who rally together to provide detergent donations, Lucie’s Laundry has become a well used free launderette in South Shields.
Our doors are open to the public three days a week, where peoples can schedule appointments to utilise our washing machines and tumble dryers, free of charge. Additionally, we provide all the detergents needed to tackle even the toughest stains.
