Experiencing homelessness is always difficult, but this winter freezing conditions and the ongoing effects of COVID-19 are leaving people sleeping rough even more at risk.

It is estimated that the number of beds in night shelters could be halved due to the fear of COVID-19 outbreaks, leaving more people out in the cold. Plus, a survey conducted across England by Groundswell found that only 55% of homeless people have been vaccinated, which might prevent them from using the declining number of shelter beds. Or, despite freezing temperatures, it could lead them to feel safer outside.

For many, this could be the toughest winter yet.

When Shaun experienced homelessness, he spent months sleeping rough in temperatures as low as minus six degrees. He joined Emmaus Coventry & Warwickshire where he found security, companionship, and training opportunities. He later moved to Emmaus Leicestershire & Rutland to be closer to his young son.

Despite having a warm, stable place to live for as long as he needs it, the memories of sleeping rough have stayed with Shaun.

“I’m still suffering the consequences of having to live outside. I’ve developed health problems from being out in all weathers and from drinking too much; at the time I used alcohol to help me sleep and to anaesthetise myself against the freezing cold.

“I remember just how difficult it was to get a place in a night shelter when I was living on the streets, but it will be even tougher this winter with COVID still around. I know that there will be rough sleepers out there in the cold tonight who are desperate to change their lives.

“Since I was welcomed into an Emmaus community I’ve never looked back. Soon after I arrived and had the chance to seek medical help, I was diagnosed as bipolar. Now I’m on regular medication and in a good place with my mental health.

Living and working in an Emmaus community gives you a sense of security and structure, which has been incredibly important to me.”

Shaun is now working towards qualifications to become an electrician, represents Emmaus within the wider community, and has the chance to build a future with his son. Help us bring more people in the warmth of an Emmaus community, where they can rebuild their lives just like Shaun has done.
